The Mathematics Curriculum

New National Curriculum for Mathematics

At St Michael’s School our aim is to enable children to use their knowledge and understanding of maths confidently, now and in in every aspect of their future lives.

Through careful planning we aim to provide children with experiences that encourage a positive attitude, an awareness of the fascination of maths, as well as the ability to solve problems, to reason, think logically and work systematically. Using a wide range of resources (such as mathematical investigations, games, challenging practical experiences and ICT) children can work purposefully with others or on their own, depending on the task. There is an emphasis on developing mental calculations as well as recording work. We look for opportunities to apply maths skills and knowledge across the curriculum and beyond, endeavouring to make mathematics purposeful, fun and rewarding for all.

We currently follow the New National Curriculum objectives in Years 1,3, 4 and 5, while Years 2 and 6 will be assessed this year using objectives from the previous Curriculum. The Abacus Online Toolkit is used across the school to ensure coverage and progression in the new curriculum. Other resources are used where appropriate to support learning.
