We have a structured reading scheme which includes a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books from different publishers. Each book is placed in a coloured book band which indicates its level of difficulty from Lilac to Dark Red. You can see progression through the book bands by clicking here.
All children in Reception to Year 3, and some children in Years 4 to 6, have a reading book which they take home every day. Children will make faster progress when someone at home listens to them read and talks about their understanding of what they have read. In school we read with as many children as we can during the school day.
Each child has a reading record which logs their daily reading. Reading books and reading records should come into school every day. When a child has finished a reading book they will be given a new one. They progress onto the next book band once staff judge that they have achieved secure reading fluency and comprehension for their current book band.
As well as reading books from the reading scheme, children can choose books from the extensive selection in our school library and all children have a weekly library session when they learn about new books and can select a book to take home.
